It’s a forceful choice, <a href="https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/mutineer" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #00bdf2; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">mutineer</a>, and a wry one, as it calls up <a href="https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/brexiteer" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #00bdf2; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Brexiteer</a>, a blend which surged last year for pro-Leave voters.</div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 16px; padding: 15px 0px;"> The <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Telegraph</em>’s ‘mutineer’ is also a fresh application of an old word. A <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">mutineer</em> originally referred to a soldier or sailor who rebels against authority – an act of <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">mutiny</em>. First attested by the <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Oxford English Dictionary</em> in 1603, <a href="http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/124339" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #00bdf2; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">mutineer</em></a> is borrowed from the French <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">mutinier</em>, based on <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">muete, </em>a ‘violent uprising’, which is the source of <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">mutiny</em>. And while a clever word, let’s hope toys like <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Sheroes</em> lead to a day when the word <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">hero </em>applies, un-gendered and equal, to us all.</div> <h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: EffraLt; font-size: 24px; font-weight: normal; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> Incels</h2> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 16px; padding: 15px 0px;"> Meanwhile, the popular message-board site <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11/09/reddit-bans-message-board-men-blame-women-celibacy/" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #00bdf2; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Reddit recently moved</a> to ban a community that calls themselves <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">incels</em>, short for <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">involuntary celibates</em>, or men who blame women for the fact that they are not having sex. Several posts in the controversial, 40,000-member-strong <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">incel</em> forum appeared to promote sexual violence against women, leading to their disbanding.</div> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: OpenSans; font-size: 16px; padding: 15px 0px;"> The term <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">incel</em> itself appears at least by 2007, when it was <a href="https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=incel" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #00bdf2; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">first entered</a> on <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Urban Dictionary</em>. With some exceptions, telephoning people in the very early morning or very late night is considered rude and disruptive. Gifts for “no occasion” can be sweet, but also hold a high potential to create lingering feelings of awkwardness for the recipient, especially with expensive gifts. Giving <b>cash</b> as a gift is generally only done within families.</p> <p dir="ltr"><b>Tipping in Canada</b></p> <p dir="ltr">When dining at any “sit-down” style restaurant, Canadians are expected to <b>tip</b>, or donate, some extra money to their waiter at the end of the meal. The bare minimum expected is <b>15%</b> of the total price of the bill, but over-tipping in the case of exceptionally good service is common as well. Failing to tip (or under-tipping) is considered extremely rude and will be immediately noticed.</p> <p dir="ltr">A variety of other professions in Canadian life expect tips as well, including pizza delivery men, taxi drivers, bellhops, and hairdressers, among others. Confusion over exactly who should and should not be tipped (and how much) has led to the creation of a lot of helpful online guides.
